Project Statament
100.lit.matchbooks is a collection of 100 matchbook designs built around short, punchy phrases. Inspired by vintage matchbooks, retro advertising, and found ephemera, the project plays with the relationship between text, object, and memory.
Using a limited format and repeated structure, each piece explores how a few words—paired with typographic styling—can create tone, humor, or suggestion. Some phrases feel familiar, others intentionally ambiguous, echoing the language of advertising while leaving space for interpretation.
By working through repetition and variation, the series treats constraint as a tool for discovery, turning a small, overlooked object into a platform for narrative and experimentation.
Created as part of a Spring 2024 Graphic Design Seminar at Indiana University.
